Maintaining A Monster
The digital system is a very complex animal on the station end in order to make it cheaper for the consumer to receive the pictures. We have thousands of Dollars invested in equipment that allows you to pick the signal up on a $40 box, as well as TV sets with a reasonable price tag in most stores.
One thing about any digital technology is the software evolves fairly quickly, and even the hardware we use changes often, just like that obsolete PC or cellphone you just bought. We have already replaced our HD encoders before the majority of you could even see DTV, and the software has evolved a few times since then.
I have been upgrading the software in our system and doing the updates one piece at a time. Yesterday I had to flash in the new software for our HD encoder, which knocked us off the air for 23 minutes during the show “Daytime” at noon. I try to pick and choose when to do these upgrades, and most are done overnight while you are sleeping, but sometimes we have to do it when we have tech support from the manufacturers on hand in case something goes wrong. Taking 23 minutes to load code into a box is not something we have to do often, but it is necessary to keep things updated and running smoothly.
We have to do all the hard work on this end, so all you have to do is set up your converter box and antenna and enjoy clear digital TV. Now a few folks are still struggling with those antennas, but I have every confidence in them to resolve those issues.
