Shooting Apollo 11, and other history, on a TV screen

Forty years ago today, I shot this photo of the Apollo 11 moon landing from the screen of my parents’ TV set. I shot it with my Polaroid Swinger, an instant black-and-white camera that cost $19.95 in the 1960s.

That’s the equivalent of $130 in today’s dollars. That’s enough to buy, say, a Canon PowerShot A1000 IS, a 10-megapixel camera that’s among our recommended compacts. Of course, back then, “instant” meant that you got your print right out of the camera, a couple of minutes after you shot it.

My research indicates that the Swinger had a shutter speed of 1/200 of a second and film speed of ISO 640. That’s respectable, even by today’s standards: Virtually all of today’s point-and-shoots can shoot at ISO settings of 640 or higher. However, the image quality of high-speed film back then can hardly be compared with that of even our lowest-rated digitals.

Today, there are many more ways to capture images of history, from digitally recording directly from a TV tuner to downloading others’ photos from the Web. But, to me, photographing from the screen of a Tv set still has its appeal, if only for nostalgia’s sake.

If you want to shoot photographs from the screen of your set as I did, here are some tips from our camera experts:

  • If you have an SLR, use it. It will give you better results than a point-and-shoot.
  • If your point-and-shoot has manual controls, find its menu for setting shutter speed and set it to 1/30 of a second. If you use a shutter speed faster than that, you increase the risk of making the screen’s scan lines more obvious. (The old analog set I photographed had 525 lines of resolution.)
  • If, like most subcompacts and compacts we test, your camera doesn’t have manual controls but you can adjust its ISO setting, try a few test shots at its two or three lowest ISO values (typically 80, 100, or 200). That may give you the slow shutter speed you need.
  • Turn off the flash.
  • Use a tripod. At a shutter speed of 1/30 of a second, camera shake is a significant risk.
  • If you’re shooting a digital TV, set its display mode to 720p or 1080p, rather than 720i or 1080i. The two latter modes are more problematic to shoot.

Did you watch the Apollo 11 landing on 7/20/69? Did you try to photograph it? Post your memories of that event below. If you’re not old enough to remember that event, share your experiences shooting photographs off the screen of a TV set. —Jeff Fox
